Putin instructed to give a symmetrical response to the Americans
The relevant ministries of the Russian Federation must assess the level of threat posed by the United States to the Russian Federation and prepare a response.
Russian President Vladimir Putin stated this during an operational meeting with permanent members of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, according to the Kremlin website.
He recalled that on August 18, the United States conducted a test launch of a ground-based cruise missile, which, according to the US military department, hit a target at a distance of over 500 kilometers.
The head of the Russian state emphasized that such weapons belong to the category prohibited under the Treaty on the Elimination of Intermediate-Range and Short-Range Missiles of 1987.
It was also said that the tests of a missile with characteristics prohibited under this treaty took place only 16 days after the completion of the procedure for denunciation of the said Treaty, initiated by Washington.
“All this leaves no doubt about the true intentions of the United States: by getting rid of established restrictions, to free up its hands to deploy previously banned missiles in various regions of the world. American politicians of a very high rank and level say that the deployment of new systems can begin in the Asia-Pacific region, but this also affects our fundamental interests, because all this is located near the Russian borders,” the president noted.
He stressed that Russia is not going to get drawn into a costly arms race.
“At the same time, keeping in mind the newly emerging circumstances, I instruct the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and other relevant departments to analyze the level of threat posed by the mentioned actions of the United States for our country and take comprehensive measures to prepare a symmetrical response,” he said Putin.
