Putin demanded changes to the Constitution of Ukraine
Extending the law on the special status of Donbass is a good step in the right direction, but only if this law becomes permanent and is also enshrined in the Constitution of Ukraine.
Russian President Vladimir Putin stated this during a joint press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“By mutual opinion, the Minsk agreements remain the only basis for normalizing the situation in the South-East of Ukraine. It is important that the specific tasks set during our recent meetings in the Normandy format were implemented. We really hope that the Ukrainian side will begin to implement the agreements on a political settlement.
The extension of the law on the special status of Donbass is a good step in the right direction, but the law should become indefinite, as provided for in the Minsk agreements. It is necessary to consolidate the special status of Donbass in the Ukrainian Constitution, which is also reflected in Minsk.
We understand all the difficulties of the internal political process in Ukraine, but if all interested parties want to achieve a final settlement, we need to implement the Minsk agreements,” Putin said.
The importance of adhering to the course envisaged by Minsk was also noted by the German Chancellor.
“We also discussed the Normandy format. In Paris we had at least a partially successful meeting, at which we were not able to solve all the problems, but by the end of the year we had an exchange of prisoners. The ceasefire regime is now being strengthened. This is all correct. Now we will continue to work in order to achieve further progress at the next summit in accordance with the Minsk agreements,” Angela Merkel emphasized.
