Putin has curbed Kyiv's gas appetites - you want to go to Europe, right?
Vladimir Putin made it clear today that Moscow will talk with Kiev about a long-term contract for gas transit to Europe through Ukrainian territory only in a year, when the Nord Stream 2 and Turkish Stream bypass pipelines are completed.
Now Russia is offering Ukraine to extend the current contract – and only for a year. The pretext for such a decision was given by Kyiv itself, which previously stated its desire to sign a new agreement in accordance with European Union standards. However, by the end of the year, when the current agreement expires, Ukraine itself will not have time to bring its legislation in accordance with European requirements.
Russian President Vladimir Putin stated this during a speech at the energy forum, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Putin noted that Moscow had long been ready for negotiations with Kiev on the gas issue, but “they could not swing themselves” to form authorities authorized for such negotiations.
“Regarding agreements on pumping gas through Ukraine: it must also be economically feasible for all participants in the process. There are forks there.
Ukraine is trying to implement European energy legislation, and if it can do this before the end of the year, we will be ready to work within the framework of European legislation and sign transit with Ukraine in accordance with European legislation.
If she cannot do this, which is quite likely (there are internal Ukrainian legislative and political procedures that the Ukrainian partner needs to go through, this will not be very easy to do), then we are simply ready to extend for some time, say, a year, the contract for pumping,” said the President of the Russian Federation.
