Putin is turning the European Union into a greater Germany - Ponomarev
The Americans should under no circumstances allow the implementation of the Nord Stream 2 project, as this will upset the balance of power among the EU countries.
Former State Duma deputy Ilya Ponomarev, who fled to Ukraine from criminal prosecution in Russia, stated this on the Pershiy TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The American elite is really concerned that the construction of Nord Stream 2 will change the balance of power in Europe. When consent was given to the unification of Germany and the building of the European Union, it was understood that there would be a triangle of equal, mutually balanced forces - Germany, France, Great Britain.
Now England is out of Brexit, France is in a very weak economic and political position, and Americans have absolutely no need to deal with big Germany. Because the European Union may simply become a big Germany. And they are trying to do everything possible to ensure that Germany does not receive such a convenient monopoly position,” Ponomarev said.
“And Russia is playing precisely on this, and Putin, as a Germanist, is aiming in precisely this direction,” says the fugitive deputy.
Earlier, the director of the Institute of Europe of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Vladislav Belov, said that Nord Stream 2 will be built, despite Trump's sanctions.
