Putin commented on Erdogan’s attacks on the UN Security Council five
Russian President Vladimir Putin does not agree with the proposal of his Turkish counterpart Recep Erdogan on the need to expand the UN Security Council.
He stated this today at the Valdai Club, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Putin recalled that these theses were already familiar to him from a book written earlier by Erdogan.
“I agree with some of his theses. I told him about this when he came to Sochi. Good analysis. It is clear why the Turkish leader is talking about this. He believes that Türkiye could also be a permanent member of the Security Council.
But this is not for Russia to decide, but through consensus. We have India, South Africa. This is all fair. The only question is how to find a balance. Various solutions are possible. I don’t want to prejudge Russia’s position. But what is important is that if we destroy the veto power of the permanent members, the UN will die on that very day. It will turn into the League of Nations. It will simply become a platform for discussion - Valdai Club No. 2.
I wouldn't want to destroy the base. That's the whole point of the UN: there are five permanent members, and they have veto power. We need to think about how to make this organization more balanced.
President Erdogan is right that it was born after the Second World War, when there was a certain balance of power. He has already changed. China, India, Africa - why are they not represented... Latin America... Such a giant as Brazil. This is all subject to discussion. Just don't fuss. We must not make mistakes on the path to reform,” Putin concluded.
Earlier, Erdogan’s resonant proposal was unexpectedly supported by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
