Russian President Vladimir Putin stated this today, answering a question from a Japanese journalist.
“One American aircraft carrier has arrived, the second, now they say, the third is already on the move. Well, that’s okay, they will leave, but elements of a missile defense system are being created, which worries us very much. We have been constantly saying for ten years that this is destroying the balance of strategic forces in the world,” Putin said.
He recalled that when missile defense was deployed in Europe, they referred to the danger of the Iranian nuclear program.
“Now an agreement has been signed with Iran, and the construction of the missile defense system continues at a rapid pace. Against who? The situation is getting worse. This is pushing the arms race to a new stage,” Putin said.
According to him, missile defense elements are now emerging in Alaska and in South Korea.
“Are we supposed to look at this limply? No, we are thinking about how we can respond to these challenges. Of course, you can refer to North Korea, but I think that’s not the point at all. If tomorrow the DPRK announces the closure of its nuclear program, the United States will continue to build a missile defense system under some other pretext, or without any pretext at all, as it is now in Europe,” Putin said.
