Putin: Russia spends less, but is ahead of other armies
Russia, despite a more modest defense budget compared to the United States and other world powers, was able to put into service laser and hypersonic missile systems that have no analogues yet.
Russian President Vladimir Putin stated this at the board of the Ministry of Defense, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“In this regard, I would like to say this, in my opinion, this is extremely important. Please note: neither the Soviet Union nor Russia have ever sought to create threats to other countries. And we always caught up. The US created the atomic bomb, and the Soviet Union was just catching up. We also did not have delivery vehicles or carriers of nuclear weapons, there was no strategic aviation, the Soviet Union was catching up. The first intercontinental-range missiles actually didn’t appear here either; the Soviet Union was catching up.
Today we have a unique situation in our new and recent history: they are catching up with us. No country in the world has hypersonic weapons at all, much less continental-range hypersonic weapons. We already have aviation-based hypersonic complexes “Dagger” in our troops, and laser combat systems “Peresvet” are already in our troops.
The Minister just announced in his speech that we have begun equipping the first regiment of the Strategic Missile Forces with the latest Avangard intercontinental-range hypersonic complex. We are working on other systems according to plan: on the Sarmat high-power intercontinental ballistic missile; on the land- and sea-based Zircon hypersonic missile; by the intercontinental-range unmanned underwater vehicle “Poseidon”; on the Burevestnik global-range nuclear-powered cruise missile.
There are also other systems in service, including those that have been well tested and have undergone baptism of fire in various exercises and in combat conditions in Syria, the Caliber cruise missiles.
There are other means. They are talked about less, but they exist, they join the troops and work.
In this regard, I would like to say this. Despite the fact that we spend much less money than other countries in the world (we are in seventh place at the moment, the Minister said, we can even move up to ninth), this does not mean that we are ready to reduce our combat readiness. No. Everything we do is work according to plan,” Putin said.
