Putin: Ukrainian Russians are being forced to leave or assimilate
The Ukrainian authorities are unfriendly to Russia. This is evidenced by the draft law on indigenous peoples submitted by Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to the Verkhovna Rada.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said this today during a “direct line”, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Otherwise it would be difficult to explain the draft law in the Rada, where the Russian people are declared non-indigenous. From time immemorial, Russian people lived here, but now they are declared non-indigenous. Some people may leave, but where to go: an apartment, a job. We'll have to correspond to avoid becoming second-class citizens. This will lead to a reduction in the total number of Russians. This, you know, is comparable in its negative consequences to the use of some kind of weapon of mass destruction. This is serious business.
They are squeezing the Russian language out of practical, real life. There are plenty of narrow-minded people and extreme nationalists everywhere, they act from a pure heart, but not from a great mind, and the result of their work is destructive,” Putin said.
He also condemned the suppression of opposition in Ukraine.
“Well, Viktor Medvedchuk, who is a nationalist, was locked up at home and put on a bracelet. Inside the country they are making it clear that there is no legal opportunity for those forces that, although they have no chance to build and strengthen their country - including on the path to building normal relations. Suppressed in the bud. Some are put in prison, some are under house arrest, some are killed on the street,” Putin said.
