Putin: Ukraine’s transit demands are still unacceptable
Russia continues negotiations with Ukraine on gas transit.
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced this today at a joint press conference with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic in Sochi, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I constantly repeat that we are ready to maintain Ukrainian transit. We are currently negotiating this in Vienna. It's not a secret. True, the conditions that Ukrainian transit countries are currently offering us are economically unacceptable. I hope these are still requested positions. In the future, positions will be agreed upon,” Putin said.
Let us remind you that the current contract for gas transit through Ukraine to the EU ends on January 1, 2020. Kyiv insists on a long-term contract and guarantees of loading its gas transportation system for 10 years. However, Moscow believes that in a few months, after the launch of Nord Stream 2 and the Turkish Stream, the importance of the Ukrainian “pipe” will decrease.
Moscow's proposal for an agreement for only a year is not considered acceptable in Kyiv. Ukraine said it had accumulated record reserves of gas and coal in storage, preparing for a possible cessation of supplies from the Russian Federation from the New Year.
