Russian President Vladimir Putin, during a press conference in Paris, responded to the claims of Western journalists about the arrests of participants in unauthorized protests of liberals in Moscow, recalling much larger unrest in France, the repetition of which the Russian authorities are trying to prevent.

“Recently, many people have been arrested during peaceful demonstrations in Moscow. Mr. Putin, how do you explain this?” – a question was asked to Putin.

“About the riots in Moscow. All this is connected with the electoral cycle. Elections to regional authorities, including Moscow, are due to take place in September this year. In 2014, when the previous elections took place, approximately 111 people were not allowed to vote. For various reasons, the election commissions did not allow these people to participate in the elections for relevant violations. This year, 57 people were also not allowed to participate in the elections for obvious violations during the election campaign. There are simply falsified signatures, according to experts from election commissions.

There is a legal way to resolve disputes - these are judicial procedures, and there are precedents when unregistered candidates who went to court defended their right to be elected. There are already such precedents. A decision has been made regarding at least one person, the decision has been made to allow him to participate in the elections.

As for these events themselves, I think I won’t say anything new: citizens have the right to peaceful protests in accordance with the current law, and the authorities must ensure the implementation of these rights. But no one - neither the authorities nor any groups of citizens - have the right to violate the current law and bring the situation to the point of absurdity, or to a clash with the authorities. This is a violation of the law, and everyone who is guilty of these violations must be held accountable in accordance with this very Russian law.

As we know, events of this kind occur not only in Russia. I’m visiting and I’m embarrassed to talk about this, but I have to, since you’re asking such questions.

We all know the events associated with the so-called yellow vests, during which, it seems to us, according to our calculations, 11 people were killed, 2500 were injured, including 2000 police officers. We would not want such events to occur in the Russian capital, and we will do everything to ensure that our internal political situation develops strictly within the framework of the current law,” Putin replied.
