Russian President Vladimir Putin announced this today in Astrakhan at a meeting of the Council on Interethnic Relations.
“As a result, almost 80 percent of the country’s citizens - I note this with satisfaction - consider relations between people of different nationalities to be friendly or normal. Several years ago, such an assessment, as surveys show, was given by only 55 percent of our citizens,” Putin was quoted as saying by the Kremlin’s official website.
According to the president, Russian citizens of different nationalities realize that they are united by common values and traditions, the great Russian culture, and the Russian language.
“However, the formation of Russian identity is a complex and slow process. But, of course, it is happening, and in recent years it has been quite active. Citizens’ perception of themselves as part of Russia and increased responsibility for their country are becoming more and more stable,” Putin said.
