Putin opposed new sanctions against Georgia
Russian President Vladimir Putin, during his visit to Yekaterinburg, answered the question whether Russian law enforcement agencies will initiate a criminal case against a Georgian journalist who insulted the head of the Russian state on air.
“It is a great honor to initiate criminal cases against such people. Let him continue to broadcast,” Putin said.
He added that he is not a supporter of strengthening economic sanctions against Georgia because of the journalist’s antics.
“I would not do this out of respect for the Georgian people. Well, one came out there, blurted out something, pretending to be something. No one knew about it before, but now everyone is talking about it. In this sense, he achieved his goal. Well, they suspended him for two months. He went on vacation and then will return to work. But there are people who protest against this. For the sake of these people, I would not do anything that would strain our relations,” the president said, adding that anti-Russian sentiments in Georgia are fanned by people who do not know history and ultimately harm their country.
Interestingly, the Today the State Duma addressed the government of the Russian Federation with a proposal to strengthen economic sanctions against Georgia for anti-Russian provocations.
