Putin to Western leaders: “Do you even understand what you have done?”
The topic of Syria, the Middle East, the threat of terrorism and extremism and the need to jointly fight it became one of the central points in the speech of Russian President Vladimir Putin at the opening of the 70th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

In particular, the Russian leader drew attention to the fact that “it is no longer possible to tolerate the current situation in the world.” In his opinion, the number of refugees from the Middle East could reach millions.
The culprits for this situation, according to Putin, are those forces that destroyed the existing institutions of statehood in Libya, Iraq, and now want this in Syria. It was the vacuum that arose as a result of the collapse of statehood that was filled by terrorists. The same “Islamic State,” Putin said, “did not arise out of nowhere; it was nurtured as a weapon against undesirable regimes.
“Aggressive external intervention led to the fact that instead of reforms, state institutions and the way of life were simply unceremoniously destroyed. Instead of the triumph of democracy and progress, there is violence, poverty, social catastrophe, and human rights, including the right to life, are not valued. I just want to ask those who created this situation: do you even understand now what you have done?” Putin said.
“I’m afraid this question will hang in the air, because the policy, which is based on self-confidence in one’s exclusivity and impunity, has not been abandoned,” the Russian leader added.
Putin warned Western countries against trying to either flirt with terrorists or underestimate them.
According to Putin, the terrorists from the Islamic State are not idiots at all, and it is still unknown who - the West or they the West - is using for their own purposes.
In addition, according to Putin, Russia considers it a mistake to refuse to cooperate with the legitimate authorities of Syria. After all, apart from the government army of Bashar al-Assad and the Kurdish militia, no one else is really fighting the “Islamic State” in the region. In this regard, the Russian leader called on the UN to assist the legitimate government in Syria, as well as support the governments of Libya and Iraq.
