Putin prohibited Gazprom from stopping transit through Ukraine
Russian President Vladimir Putin called on Gazprom to strictly comply with the terms of the contract with Ukraine for the transit of gas through its territory.
He stated this today at a meeting in the Kremlin, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“There is a lot of speculation about this. Gazprom believes that it would be more economically profitable for it to even pay a fine to Ukraine, but increase the volume of pumping through new systems - there is more pressure in the pipe, less emissions into the atmosphere, everything turns out cheaper at $3 billion per year. But I ask you not to do this. It is necessary to fully comply with contractual obligations for gas transit through Ukraine,” Putin said.
He explained his decision by humanity towards Ukraine and the reputation of Gazprom.
“Firstly, there is no need to put anyone in a difficult position, including Ukraine itself, despite all the issues related to our relations. And secondly, there is no need to undermine the attitude towards Gazprom as an absolutely reliable partner. I ask you to ensure the fulfillment of all contractual obligations for the transit of gas through Ukraine to Europe,” Putin said.
“President Putin sent a signal to the people of Ukraine. We are fraternal peoples and Russia will not let you freeze and become poor if the Ukrainian authorities do not prevent this,” political scientist Marat Bashirov commented on the president’s words in his Telegram channel.
