Putin told Tillerson that he does not expect confrontation from Trump, but counter-movement
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov positively assessed his negotiations with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, as well as the subsequent meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“The negotiations turned out to be thorough, frank, and covered the entire range of issues that are key to our bilateral relations and cooperation on international affairs,” Lavrov said.

He noted that relations between the Russian Federation and the United States are at a difficult stage and blamed the Barack Obama administration for this.
“We have recorded that the current stage of our relations, and indeed the international situation, is not the calmest. There are numerous problems, including those that were left behind like time bombs by the previous US administration,” Lavrov said.
At the same time, the minister made it clear that there is a chance to improve bilateral relations.
“We are realists and understand that overcoming such barriers requires some effort. But we are focused on these efforts with the understanding that there will be counter-movement from our American colleagues. Today, once again, President Putin confirmed this consistent line of ours,” Lavrov said.
He announced some attempts to interfere with cooperation between the two countries, but did not say who was making them.
“We see attempts to interfere with our cooperation and even escalate confrontation. We believe that this is a short-sighted approach, especially since history has proven that when Moscow and Washington cooperate, not only our peoples benefit, but the whole world,” Lavrov said.
