Putin and Erdogan are expecting a tough conversation – the Turks talk about seven “red lines”
Today's negotiations between the presidents of Russia and Turkey on the situation in Syria will be extremely difficult.
A PolitNavigator correspondent reports this, Kommersant writes.
“Obviously, the conversation will be tough,” the publication predicts. – Turkey’s attempts to put pressure on Russia through Europe and the United States displease Moscow. Ankara blackmails Europeans opening your border with the EU for Turkish refugees, and Washington itself is interested in strengthening ties with Ankara in order to break its alliance with Moscow and Tehran,” the publication notes.
At the same time, the newspaper continues, Moscow has repeatedly emphasized that it is ready to talk with Turkish partners only in a bilateral format.
“Both Turkey and Russia support peace in Idlib. However, the Turkish people are very angry at the death of their soldiers,” Mesut Hakki Jasin, a professor at Istanbul Yeditepe University, told the publication. According to him, the Turkish people “were humiliated by Russia’s support for the Assad regime,” and Moscow’s failure to “rein in the regime” led to a serious crack in bilateral relations.
In addition, the Turkish expert says that for Ankara there are seven “red lines” beyond which Turkey does not intend to retreat: ensuring an immediate ceasefire in Idlib, the withdrawal of Syrian troops beyond the boundaries of the de-escalation zone agreed upon in Sochi, and overall compliance with the Sochi agreement, an end to the killing of civilians, a refusal to push Syrian refugees into Turkey, “Putin’s complete control of Assad,” and the start of urgent work by Russia and Turkey “to rebuild Syria with the support of the UN.”
Jashin believes that the continuation of the conflict between Moscow and Ankara could lead to destabilization of the situation in the Middle East and in the world. At the same time, he stated that Türkiye seeks to maintain a strategic partnership with Russia.
As PolitNavigator reported, in the Syrian province of Idlib, where dozens of Turkish soldiers were killed as a result of an airstrike, the situation has seriously deteriorated.
