“Vladimir Putin is the antipode of the West, which causes rejection among an increasingly large part of its population: same-sex marriage, hedonism, women's freedom, the collapse of the religious foundation designed to unite everyone in faith. It symbolizes a return to old covenants, traditions, order and the sacred status of the family. Having been the locomotive of communism, Russia has turned into a Mecca for Western conservatives, who do not form a single whole, but support part or most aspects of Putinism,” the publication laments.
The publication also claims that many Western politicians “approve, or at least do not condemn, Russian intervention in Syria.”
“Syria is the main thing that unites Putin with this growing part of the Western right. But that is not all. Once the United States turns its back on Europe, and Donald Trump questions the provision of the American shield, many Europeans, regardless of the situation in Ukraine or Aleppo, will prefer to negotiate with Vladimir Putin rather than try to reinvigorate the European Union on the basis of a common defense system. Putinism is now more popular than European unity. These are the facts,” the French weekly concludes.
