...It was April 25, Mariupol Yalta. A group of friends and I (there were only 5 of us) drove towards Mariupol in my Mazda “C” car. We had information from local residents that an infantry fighting vehicle and a T-64 tank were abandoned near Yalta by “dill”; the combat guard consisted of about 8 people. We decided to talk to these guards, if possible, disarm them and take away the armored vehicles.

When we arrived there, there were not 8 people there, but a whole battalion, 350-400 people. I sent two of my guys along the green line and two people went to the farm.
I went up to the guard checkpoint and asked for the chief of the guard. The lieutenant approached. I asked who their senior man was, introduced himself, and suggested that the chief of guard invite the senior man to talk to me. I was taken through the location of the unit and taken into the headquarters tent.
I managed to see about 10 pieces of equipment, not counting Kamaz trucks, a staff vehicle and everything else, that is, there was a decent amount of equipment. There was a hodgepodge of people there – contract soldiers, conscripts, and some kind of “partisans”.
They took me into the headquarters tent, offered me tea, and we had a “nice” conversation. There were six senior officers in front of me, from captain to lieutenant colonel. I set a condition for them: within two hours they lay down their arms and calmly leave, and we drive up buses, put them on buses, and take them away towards Zaporozhye. They really thought that if a senior officer, with the rank of lieutenant colonel, came in, sat down and offered such conditions - they could not think that I was just bluffing. They thought that there were really a hundred of us, or even more. I said that I had four “cuckoos” in position, and asked the lieutenant to count how many shots the sniper fired per minute. He made a mistake and said 56. I said, “Multiply by four.” They quickly figured that my four “cuckoos” would simply kill all their fighters, and they began to slightly panic. My hands shook even more.
After that, I left the unit’s territory. But I want to pay tribute to the company commander, his name was also Alexander, a real officer’s core was felt in him. He apologized to me and said: “Comrade Lieutenant Colonel, I am fulfilling the duty of an officer, my unit will not surrender its weapons and will defend itself.” I replied: “Before taking any action, I always tell my fighters one thing: think first, and then make decisions.” We parted on a good note.
But, when we retreated to our positions (and the position was a vehicle that was parked in a field), it was clearly visible through binoculars that this unit began to take up a perimeter defense. Plus, they called two helicopters, Mi-24s, and they began to spin a “carousel” over us and enter in combat formation. We realized that our “trick” had failed and decided to leave our “positions.”
We began to slowly emerge from under the turntables, and when we left the field onto the highway, four armored personnel carriers drove by, I think, with special forces, I have a trained eye: the guys were sitting on the armor and turning their heads 180 degrees, not holding on to the armor, apparently there was army special forces. We quietly, calmly, without creating any noise, left Yalta and returned to Donetsk.
Later, the media reported that one hundred separatists, led by Berkut Colonel Alexander, attacked a military unit, suffered heavy losses, and that the “dill” fought so selflessly against us that they were presented with government awards and monetary rewards. I saw this personally: the Minister of Defense spoke on TV, then Turchynov talked about how valiant our Ukrainian soldiers are. But in fact, there were five of us.
As a child, I loved reading Dold-Mikhailik’s book “And One Warrior in the Field” about scouts. This can be compared with our outing. Still, hundreds of times superior forces were raised against us. They just scared us. And this truly reflects the morale and fighting spirit of the Ukrainian army, whose “warriors” immediately raise their hands in the event of danger. They can shout as much as they want that they are strong in spirit - but I would not say.
Because we know what we are fighting for. We are fighting for our land. For their children, for their wives, for their grandchildren. This is the land of our fathers and grandfathers.
What we will not forgive the “dill” is Odessa, Slavyansk, Saur-Mogila, which was practically destroyed. And even though the “ukrops” shouted that they were defending there for twelve whole days, I wouldn’t say that they were defending, they were just hiding. They said that they were attacked by Russian special forces - and if Russian special forces had attacked, they would have been knocked out in an hour. Believe me, this is actually true.
