This opinion was expressed on the air of the Ukrainian TV channel NewsOne by General of the Ukrainian Army, ex-commander of the Internal Troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, former head of the Donetsk Regional State Administration Alexander Kikhtenko, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“There are no people in my circle who believe that we will become NATO members in the near future. This is not a charity, it is expensive. Secondly, NATO does not accept countries that have territorial claims, and Ukrainian Crimea has become part of the Russian Federation. Until he returns and the fighting in the east ends, it is not serious to talk about NATO. We may become NATO members in 10-20 years, or not at all,” Kikhtenko said.
He believes that a victory for Ukraine would not be joining the Alliance, but the establishment of special relations with the United States, like Israel.
“It is not so important for us to build our army according to NATO standards, which only the lazy are not talking about now. Because these are very serious criteria that Ukraine is not able to fulfill today. We need to build our own Ukrainian army, which could provide the defense of our state today. To do this, we need to approach acquisition problems differently. We now have a workers' and peasants' army. People serve who, for some reason, could not refuse the draft,” Kikhtenko said.
