The Rada is determined to disrupt early elections
The Ukrainian parliament’s sabotage of the adoption of a new electoral law, the draft of which was introduced by President Vladimir Zelensky, shows that deputies are trying to avoid early elections.
Kyiv political experts interviewed by Moskovsky Komsomolets come to this conclusion.
Thus, political scientist Alexey Yakubin noted that a significant part of the deputies from the Petro Poroshenko Bloc and the Popular Front are majoritarians and considered the abolition of the mixed system as a blow to themselves, especially since these deputies have been “feeding” the districts for several years now.
“It seems to me that behind the disruption of the vote is also an attempt by the parliament to make one of the public trips to the new president, as was the case with the choice of the date of his inauguration,” Yakubin believes.
In turn, the head of the Kyiv Institute of Global Strategies, Vadim Karasev, noted that at first glance it looks like the bill was opposed by the “Radical Party” and most of the “Popular Front”, which would benefit from lowering the entry barrier.
“I think they are determined to disrupt early elections altogether. In any case, Zelensky benefits from this whole story, if, of course, elections eventually take place. Now the Verkhovna Rada is resisting the new president, and on this emotional wave, Servant of the People can compensate for the lack of majoritarians. They can get even more than under the new compromise electoral law,” Karasev believes.
As PolitNavigator reported, The Verkhovna Rada staged a demarche, without supporting the bill introduced by President Zelensky to abolish the majoritarian system and reduce the entry barrier from five to three percent.
In addition, the Rada no longer wants to disband and Zelensky is declared a usurper.
