The Rada threw a barrel at Italy for “creating an anti-Ukrainian atmosphere”
The Ukrainian parliament adopted a statement condemning Rome for criminal prosecution National Guardsman Vitaly Markiv, sentenced in Italy to 24 years in prison for the murder of a photo reporter in the Donbass.
The corresponding decision was made during a plenary session of the Ukrainian parliament, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to Resolution No. 2717 published on the Rada website “On the statement of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine in connection with the criminal prosecution of a senior sergeant of the National Guard of Ukraine in the Italian Republic,” the parliament believes that this criminal case was conducted in violation of the principles of the rule of law, guarantees of a fair trial and the presumption of innocence .
“The trial took place in a deeply anti-Ukrainian atmosphere, the prosecution’s evidence was based on rumors and prejudices, the court rejected a request to inspect the scene of the incident on Mount Karachun (represented by Markiv’s defense), and the probable involvement of the Russian and pro-Russian side who gathered there during the tragedy was not investigated “, it is noted that during the trial, no clear unambiguous evidence was provided of the guilt of the Ukrainian military, in general, of Vitaly Markiv, in particular,” the document says.
The Rada also protested against accusing Ukraine of violating international humanitarian law and bringing “independence” to this case as a defendant, since this allegedly contradicts the basic principles of international law.
“The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine categorically condemns the use of unacceptable wording in the materials of the verdict, according to which the Ukrainian army is “the rebel Ukrainians who captured Karachun”, it is stated that “shooting at civilians was the usual way of action of the Ukrainian army and the NSU”, and military operations in the east Ukraine is called an “ongoing civil war,” the text of the statement emphasizes.
The Verkhovna Rada proceeded to vote for the resolution without any discussion. The initiative was supported by 323 parliamentarians out of 388 present, and only one of them voted against.
