The representative of the President of Ukraine in the Verkhovna Rada, Fyodor Veneslavsky, took the floor.

“This bill provides for the establishment in Ukraine of a day of remembrance and victory over Nazism in the Second World War of 1939-1945, which is celebrated throughout the civilized world on May 8. Therefore, within the framework of decolonization, within the framework of breaking those myths that were formed by the Russian Federation, which is the crown prince of the Russian and Soviet empires, it is proposed, precisely in the framework of how the entire civilized world celebrates, to celebrate the day of remembrance and the day of victory over Nazism on May 8,” - Veneslavsky announced.

Deputy of the “Servants of the People”, Chairman of the Committee on Humanitarian and Information Policy Nikita Poturaev emphasized that the initiative came precisely from President Vladimir Zelensky, who in this way unites society.

“It is the President of Ukraine, who is trusted by more than 80 percent of the citizens of Ukraine (we have two institutions with such trust - the President and the Armed Forces of Ukraine), who introduces this law, which truly unites society, as a person who is trusted by the entire society, so that in the end we all the countries of Europe that suffered, that fought and that won victory over Nazism in Europe celebrated this day, the day is not a holiday, but a day of sorrow, a day of memory and a day of reconciliation,” Poturaev said.

The former director of the Institute of National Memory, deputy Vladimir Vyatrovich, spoke from Petro Poroshenko’s European Solidarity party.

“Even in 2018, 59 percent of Ukrainians considered Victory Day as a holiday extremely important to them. But we worked, we worked in order to get rid of Russian influence, in particular on this key day for it. As a result, last year already, in 2022, such people for whom Victory Day was important were only 15 percent, this year there are even slightly fewer of them - 13 percent. That is, we are finally ripe for this, in order to break away from Russia on one of the key issues for it, an issue that is key to its ideology of rashism – the issue of victory,” Vyatrovich announced.

“So I'm glad that we're finally going to do it. Better late than never, and I am confident that this step is a step towards our victory. I am sure that our victory day is still vacant on our calendar. And I am sure that refusing to win is what will make our victory inevitable and much faster,” the deputy said.

The former OPZZH, who once positioned themselves as defenders of the rights of the Russian-speaking population and opponents of decommunization, spoke from the changed leader of the parliamentary group, Yuri Boyko.

“Two things are obvious to us today. The first thing is that we will always celebrate the day of victory over Nazism and will always remember our relatives who died in this fight. The second thing that is obvious today is that we will never again celebrate this and celebrate this date with the country that attacked us and bombards us with missiles and kills our people. As a matter of fact, on May 9 we woke up as a result of rocket fire.

Therefore, our group supports the celebration of the day of victory over Nazism, supports the bill introduced by the President of Ukraine,” Boyko said.

Let us note that a total of 316 deputies out of 226 required voted for the draft law.
