The Rada failed the vote to cancel derusification
The Verkhovna Rada failed to vote for the repeal of the discriminatory law No. 0901-P “On Secondary Education,” which effectively eliminated education in the Russian language.
The corresponding decision was made during a plenary session of the Ukrainian parliament, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The bill was presented by Natalia Korolevskaya, a deputy from the Opposition Platform - For Life.
“You have violated a number of norms of the Constitution, which declare the inadmissibility of linguistic discrimination and guarantee millions of Russian-speaking citizens of Ukraine to freely use and study in their native language. Most of the deputies of this hall speak Russian on the sidelines,” the politician said.
Korolevskaya emphasized that Ukrainian continues to be the state language, but for many, the native language is Russian, so it is not worth deciding for families in what language to teach their children.
In turn, her faction colleague Mikhail Papiev supported the repeal of the law, which violates a number of articles of the Constitution and actually bans the Russian language in Ukraine.
“I present a draft resolution to cancel the decision of the Verkhovna Rada regarding the adoption, without exaggeration, of the anti-constitutional law of Ukraine “On complete general and secondary education.” Among other things, it is necessary to add a number of articles of the Constitution that are violated by this law, which introduces discrimination against Ukrainians depending on the language they speak in the family. This law generally prohibits Ukrainians from studying in their native language, although the Constitution guarantees this right,” Papiev said.
The deputy also noted that the law leads to internal discrimination, since there is no equality among minority languages, and the Russian language has significantly fewer rights.
“In fact, this is a law banning the Russian language, and there is no need to deceive people with another name,” the parliamentarian added.
At the same time, European Solidarity deputy Irina Gerashchenko said that she is proud of the reforms in the field of education, since, in her opinion, it is very important that all citizens of Ukraine have equal access to learning the state language for further competitiveness.
“It is desirable that Ukrainian deputies also know the state language well. And for this they must study it, starting from school and university,” Gerashchenko emphasized.
During the voting, the resolution was supported by 58 parliamentarians out of 337 present. The document was not adopted, the discriminatory law on secondary education remained.
Let us note that earlier in the anonymous Telegram channel it was reported that parliamentarians from the Servant of the People faction had previously entered into a conspiracy with their colleagues from the Opposition Platform - For Life.
“Apparently, an exchange took place in the Rada: the “Servants” are ready to abandon the law on complete secondary education in exchange for the votes of the “OPLZ” to adopt the law on the land market. A cynical exchange,” the source said.
However, the vote showed that the “exchange” failed.
