During parliamentary hearings, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine recommended that the country's President Petro Poroshenko change the status of Crimea. In particular, deputies voted to deprive Sevastopol of its special status and rename the peninsula into the Crimean Tatar Autonomous Republic.

According to the Interfax-Ukraine website, the document proposes to recognize the Crimean Tatars, Karaites and Krymchaks as indigenous peoples of Ukraine.

People's representatives recommend preparing appropriate amendments to the Constitution and laws of Ukraine and submitting them for consideration by parliament.

A year ago, a proposal to rename Crimea to the Crimean Tatar Autonomous Republic appeared on the website of the Ukrainian President.
