The Rada is going to strangle the Ukrainian media
Bill No. 2693 “On Media” submitted to the Ukrainian parliament, authored by deputies of the Servant of the People, is directed against freedom of speech and continues the policy of destroying the “wrong” Ukrainian media.
Lawyer Elena Lukash stated this in a conversation on the NEWSONE TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Today I looked at this bill, 130 pages, you can’t defeat it right away because there are “horses, people and volleys of thousands of guns mixed in a heap.” For example, there is a block on regulating the activities of the National Council, then immediately there is a block on how licenses operate, then another block. That is, they put together this bill using the “copy-paste” method, they even tried to codify it, it’s something similar to a code.
I think that [its provisions] will internally contradict each other, but the point of the law is really to try to tighten the screws. How? By very broad definitions. There is our favorite “hate speech”, there is our favorite “discrimination on linguistic, gender and other grounds”.
What's good? In fact, the National Council will do everything through the courts, it receives incredible powers, but everything else it will close sites through the courts. Therefore, there will be a chance to fight, although the situation is, of course, very sad. People who appeared because they were created by the media, the press, radio, cinema and television, came to destroy this press. And they really think that the information flow will stop if they scare someone, close them down, condemn them, take away their license, pick on the owners, or something else like that.
This is a very strange logic because the forbidden fruit is sweet and nothing piques our interest more than what is forbidden. Therefore, information, of course, will find its way. This bill is crude and stupid. But let’s see how the rest of the hall, the rest of the “servants of the people” react. The signatories here are very influential people - Tkachenko, Poturaev, Kravchuk, Kabanov... In general, they are not the least important people in Servant of the People,” Lukash said.
Thank you!
