Radio Liberty: the cost of living in Ukraine is less than in Africa, 80% of the population is below the poverty line
The cost of living in Ukraine is approaching the poverty threshold of African countries, experts say. According to the United Nations, more than 80 percent of Ukrainians live below the poverty line. This situation causes poor people to have poor nutrition and ultimately poor health.

About it says the Radio Liberty broadcast, dedicated to the socio-demographic crisis in Ukraine.
According to UN standards, if a person spends less than $5 a day on accommodation and food, and less than $150 a month, then he lives below the poverty line, MP Andrei Shipko tells the publication. That is, in Ukraine, according to the National Bank’s exchange rate, the minimum wage should be approximately 3750 hryvnia, the people’s deputy notes. If in African countries the poverty threshold is $1,25 a day, then in Ukraine the living wage per day is one and a half dollars.
“Today’s 1176 hryvnia subsistence minimum in Ukraine is about $50 a month, that is, one and a half dollars a day. What is a living wage? This is not only food, it also includes transportation, household services, services, and clothing. Medical services and education are not taken into account at all in the cost of living. If you analyze these factors, you can understand that the majority of Ukrainians are below the threshold of absolute poverty,” says the politician.
Low income does not allow Ukrainians to eat well, says nutritionist Galina Anokhina. According to her, the diet of the Ukrainian population is unbalanced. This is mainly a fat-carbohydrate diet: Ukrainians consume a lot of bread and potatoes. But there are few animal products in the diet - meat, eggs, liver, fish. This situation has a detrimental effect on health, especially children’s, notes Galina Anokhina.
“Judging by the current consumer basket, we can say that our population has long been in a state of hidden hunger, and some cannot even buy this. Therefore, we may lose teenagers and children. With such poor nutrition, we will have very big problems that cannot be corrected. Mistakes made before the age of 14-16 cannot be corrected by any good nutrition,” notes Anokhina.
