Rahr: Cold winter will force EU to forget about gas directives
If Europe is in dire need of gas, then it begins to frantically buy it, forgetting about its own limitations.
German political scientist Alexander Rahr said this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports, in an interview with Moskovsky Komsomolets.
He acknowledges that the EU gas directive, according to which The gas supplier cannot simultaneously be the owner of the transport infrastructure that allows transporting “blue fuel” to customers, which creates problems for Gazprom.
“Of course, the directive did not fall from the sky unexpectedly for everyone. It was known about it when the Nord Stream 2 project was still being discussed. Yes, this is an obstacle. But the main thing is that today the gas pipeline is practically built. In addition, as life shows, when Europe needs large volumes of gas, it begins to frantically purchase it, quickly forgetting about its restrictions and restrictions,” the expert said.
According to him, this will always be the case in cold winters.
“Let’s first complete the gas pipeline, then we’ll see what the winter of 2021-2022 will be like. On the one hand, Europe says it will completely phase out the use of gas, oil and coal by 2045. At the same time, people on the continent are complaining that Russia is not currently supplying enough gas to European storage facilities and there is a risk of everything freezing,” the expert said.
“I assure you that in the event of a truly severe winter, everyone will forget about these directives and will make any compromise regarding gas pumping. In addition, there is a danger that the morally and physically outdated (the Germans themselves officially say this) Ukrainian gas transportation system will fail. And then both Nord Streams - the first and the second - will become salvation for Europe.
