Rahr: The West will impose sanctions against Russia in response to the “Crimean” appeal of Transnistria

Moscow - Tiraspol - Kyiv, April 17 (Navigator - Mikhail Stamm) - Transnistria has agreed on its request to join Russia with Moscow, so the Transnistrian initiative will result in another spiral of sanctions against Russia and a Cold War, says Alexander Rahr, director of the German-Russian Forum.

Yesterday, the Supreme Council of Transnistria adopted an appeal to the President of the Russian Federation with a request to recognize the independence of Transnistria with its subsequent entry into Russia as a subject of the Federation. “Everything is done like Crimea,” Pridnestrovian deputy Galina Antyufeeva explained to NG, adding that the text of the appeal was sent to the UN and OSCE. According to deputy Dmitry Soin, Tiraspol agreed on this step with Moscow.

“The genie is out of the bottle,” said Alexander Rahr, scientific director of the German-Russian Forum. – After Russia’s hasty decision on Crimea, Pridnestrovie can now repeat the experience of the peninsula. But such a series - Crimea, the Donetsk Republic, Transnistria - will be accompanied by another spiral of sanctions against Russia, the situation may turn into a state of cold war. This also shows the inability of Western politics to foresee and solve anything. The West thought that Moldova would sign an agreement with the EU and Transnistria would want to follow its example. But this doesn't happen. An era of chaos is coming in the post-Soviet space, and it will not happen without conflicts,” Rahr said.

Let us recall that yesterday Prime Minister of Moldova Iurie Leanca called Tiraspol’s appeal to Moscow a direct challenge to Chisinau. And Romanian leader Traian Basescu, participating in the Digi 24 program, said: “Strategically, Russia wants to return to the mouths of the Danube. If she decides to do this, Transnistria will become part of the Russian Federation.”
