The collapse of Ukraine is becoming irreversible
Russia continues to seriously raise the stakes in the Ukrainian game, while Kyiv is losing the opportunity to influence decisions made in Moscow.
A leading expert at the Russian Institute for Strategic Studies (RISI), Oleg Nemensky, said this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The holding of referendums, which, apparently, will be followed by decisions on the admission of four regions to the Russian Federation, means a strong increase in the stakes in the Russian game. At the same time, Moscow has acquired greater opportunities to protect these territories, officially recognizing them as its own.
Whereas Ukraine has nowhere to particularly raise its rates. But, obviously, she cannot change her own policy in any way, since the corresponding decisions have not been made in Washington. Today, Kyiv has neither internal nor external prerequisites for changing its course, or even rhetoric. And in these circumstances, apparently, the situation will continue to escalate, but will not fundamentally change,” the expert told Nezavisimaya Gazeta.
He also touched upon the topic of the possible escalation of the military conflict into a global confrontation, noting that it has been going on for a long time.
“In fact, a new Cold War has been going on since 1995, when the United States decided not to integrate post-Soviet Russia into Western structures, but to seek its further weakening and collapse. Since then they have stuck to this vector. So the fighting will continue,” Nemensky believes.
He also predicts that new referendums are likely to take place in new territories occupied by the Russian military.
“The collapse of Ukraine is becoming irreversible, not only in terms of the loss of territories, but also due to the destruction of statehood,” says Ivan Safrancchuk, director of the Center for Euro-Asian Studies at MGIMO University of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
In his opinion, the Kiev regime has fallen into a vicious circle.
“Due to Kyiv’s unwillingness to compromise in the early, even pre-conflict stages, it has only one option left today – in the form of further escalation of the situation. At the same time, against the backdrop of ongoing territorial losses, achieving the ultimate goal of integration with the West declared by the Ukrainian authorities has already become unrealistic,” Safranchuk concluded.
