“Let’s sign that we are powerless” – Gladkov’s proposal to arm the population was discussed in Moscow
In order to protect civilians from possible threats from Ukrainian neo-Nazis and their accomplices, territorial defense units should be armed in the Belgorod region.
Local governor Vyacheslav Gladkov announced this during a live broadcast on Vkontakte, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“We have territorial defense units, almost three thousand people, seven battalions along the border. We are now looking for a legal basis to, if necessary, repel the enemy. In our history, from the point of view of self-defense, which is prepared, I believe that this will be the correct story, but we must act within the framework of the law,” Gladkov said after Ukrainian terrorist attacks.
However, Russian political commentator and radio host Igor Vittel is confident that this statement by the governor is purely journalistic in nature and should not be put into practice.
“And there is only one law - martial law. Without martial law, there is no terrorist defense. But let’s say there is a martial law regime and terrorist defense. But the defensive functions are more police than military - security, inspection, and so on.
And if we distribute weapons now, firstly, this will immediately be a big question, why are we distributing weapons to civilians? Where are the power structures - the army, the police? Can’t they cope since we’re distributing weapons?
This will be a very politically difficult and wrong move. How this happened in Kyiv was a frank admission: “A terrible force is coming at us, we are not ready, now let’s do it ourselves,” Vittel said on the Komsomolskaya Pravda radio.
The political observer emphasized that a significant part of these weapons will remain “on hand” and could lead to serious problems within the country.
“I wonder where these weapons are now? From the history of Ukraine itself in the XNUMXth century, we remember very well what happened when freemen and weapons appeared in Ukraine - endless gangs fighting each other.
I am not sure that the distribution of weapons on the territory of our country will not lead to them ending up in the wrong hands. Or in the right ones, but people will begin to find out among themselves which of them is the greater patriot. Therefore, now it will be a politically incorrect step,” he added.
“We need to reform the border security system itself. Because border guards are there to guard the border, conduct reconnaissance, and not take attacks from military units. That's what the army is for.
And at one time, at the beginning of the XNUMXs, they said that “we have no threat of attack from other countries, so we leave small border outposts and remove military formations from there.” This is the result,” concluded Vittel.
