“Each of the deceased police officers did their duty. All those lies, all the lies that were spread on social networks, that supposedly some police officers robbed a house, the state security service caught them, and they called the KORD special unit for support, and in the end they all shot each other, is an outright lie.

The truth is that Kyiv criminal investigation officers spent many months developing a dangerous gang that robbed the houses of Kiev residents and residents of the Kyiv region. On that fateful night, criminal investigation officers, together with the KORD special unit, were going to catch this gang at the time they committed a robbery. To understand what the criminal investigation officers were preparing, remember the film “The Meeting Place Cannot Be Changed,” when, through a long-term investigation into the activities of the Fox gang, they were lured into the basement of a store and neutralized. Approximately the same result was planned for that evening, but a tragic accident intervened.

In one of the unfinished houses, intelligence officers of the Ministry of Internal Affairs were located. Scouts are a job that requires strength of character; they had no right to divulge to anyone what they were doing here at night. And when the alarm went off in the neighboring house, employees of the state security service arrived and saw traces that led to the neighboring house, and came there, the last thing the scouts managed to say via communications was: “people in black are coming towards us, this is probably robbers, we are finished."

Hearing these words, the leaders of the special forces task force decided that the lives of their colleagues were really in danger. Within a few minutes, the fatal decision was made to launch an assault and free these scout guys. At this time, the scouts were seated in a GSO car with handcuffs on their hands.

Then the KORD employees, not knowing that the scouts fell into the hands not of robbers, but of police officers, went to this place, jumped out of the cars, and then what happened is what the prosecutor’s office must now establish in detail,” Gerashchenko said.

This version was criticized by Anatoly Fisun, an employee of the Main Directorate for Combating Organized Crime of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine (1993-2000). According to him, the criminal investigation officers should have revealed themselves.

“The operation was not carried out at the proper level. When I listen to the GSO officer who was on the spot, he says that there was evidence that these people may belong to the Ministry of Internal Affairs. In this case, there should have been one reaction - the intelligence officers should have revealed themselves. Their lives are in danger. The instructions clearly state: if an intelligence officer is in danger, he has the right to disclose. We have had cases of employees being detained in apartments, we give clear instructions: life is more valuable. A secret employee could be transferred to official work, and nothing would happen. They made everything secret, so secret that they killed five people,” he commented on Anton Gerashchenko’s statement.

In response to this, Anton Gerashchenko confirmed that the captured criminal investigation officers could have revealed themselves to the GSO officers who captured them, but did not do so.

“I completely agree with you. When the intelligence officers were captured by GSO officers, they already knew that these were their own colleagues. If the deceased at that moment had violated the instructions and said: “guys, we are here on an operation, there are 15 armed people nearby, to whom we told that we were being captured by robbers, please be careful, give us a communication channel, we will say that everything okay,” then this wouldn’t have happened. And now the investigation had to understand why this happened.

On the other hand, the instructions to intelligence officers say not to reveal themselves, except in cases where there is a threat to life. In this case, they were captured by their own police colleagues, and these guys were scouts - they seemed to calm down, they were sitting in the back seat. Perhaps they thought that their colleagues would now begin an operation to free them. This is a huge chain of accident and tragedy,” Gerashchenko said.
