Poroshenko’s advertised church autocephaly is being disrupted
The creation of a Ukrainian church independent from the Russian Orthodox Church, which was pathetically announced by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, has been postponed indefinitely.
The Kiev weekly “Mirror of the Week” writes about this today.
“Many hopes were placed on the tomos of autocephaly of the Ukrainian Church, but Constantinople is in no hurry to publish it. If earlier we were talking about July, now the possible date for the announcement of the good news has been postponed to either August or September. And how clearly the church independence of Kyiv will be spelled out is not yet too clear. According to various opinion polls, this topic worries 20 to 31% of the population, which is significantly less than what the authorities expected,” writes Zerkalo Nedeli.
The publication emphasizes that Poroshenko is interested in church independence only as a PR move before the presidential elections. He considers the deployment of UN peacekeepers to Donbass to be another topic that will help to successfully conduct the campaign, but this too has been postponed indefinitely.
