An expert on international security issues, professor of KNU, Grigory Perepelitsa, told Navigator.
“As we see, the official authorities of Ukraine delayed the possibility of a forceful scenario of an anti-terrorist operation and had high hopes for the implementation of the Geneva Agreements, but obviously this hope turned out to be unjustified. Russia entered into negotiations in Geneva in order to prevent the anti-terrorist operation from being carried out and to wait for time for saboteurs and separatists to seize the entire territory of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions, which in fact happened. If the operation had not been started, Ukraine would have lost these regions by May 9,” the expert noted.
“It is obvious that the talk at the referendum in these territories would not be about any kind of autonomy, but would talk about the secession of these regions from Ukraine. The last straw was the seizure of the prosecutor's office in Lugansk and the response to this was the start of the operation. It is obvious that resolving the conflict peacefully is no longer possible,” emphasized Grigory Perepelitsa.
