The rupture of economic cooperation with the Russian Federation will result in another disaster for Ukraine
Following the decision of the Ukrainian government to terminate the economic cooperation program with the Russian Federation, politicians in Kyiv may refuse to participate in the CIS and cancel the “Grand Treaty”. Such steps will lead to Ukraine losing trade turnover with Russia amounting to more than 10 billion dollars a year, as well as losing a free trade zone with the CIS
Economic expert Andrei Blinov stated this on the NewsOne TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to him, Russia, no matter what, remains Ukraine’s largest trading partner, although volumes have decreased after 2014.
“The peak volume of mutual trade between Russia and Ukraine occurred just at the beginning (activity) of this document, for 11-12 years. Now these volumes are approximately four times less...
Indeed, now we have large volumes with the Russian Federation. Russia among nation states, not associations like the European Union, but among nation states, remains number one. This is eleven billion mutual trade turnover last year...
This week in parliament the question was raised again about why Ukraine has not yet left the CIS, but let me remind you that there is one cornerstone there that is simply the most important for us in terms of trade - duty-free trade. The free trade agreement is still in effect.
It is possible that in the wake of preparations for elections in Ukraine, people in power may decide to take this step.
We also hear that the big agreement between Russia and Ukraine in 97 on friendship, cooperation and, in fact, an agreement on borders, is also likely to change it. These steps could lead to Russia taking some symmetrical or perhaps even asymmetrical measures,” Blinov said.
