The severance of ties with Russia accelerated the process of depopulation in Ukraine

Maidan and the events that followed it accelerated the decline in the Ukrainian population, which began in the early 1990s, former head of the NBU Sergei Arbuzov writes in Izvestia.

The author recalls that after the collapse of the USSR, within a few years, numerous high-tech industries ceased to exist, hundreds of research institutes were closed, and “industry giants switched to the production of spoons and wheelbarrows,” which seriously changed the structure of the Ukrainian economy and led to monstrous social consequences .

“Now, after another severance of ties with Russia, there is a second wave of deindustrialization, as a result of which millions of other workers who have turned into “extra mouths” in the raw materials economy are no longer needed. All this together becomes the main reason for impoverishment and depopulation,” Arbuzov points out. – It is the economy that “pushes” Ukrainians out of the country. And if nothing changes, the situation will continue to worsen. Depopulation is gaining momentum and is actually already “feeding” itself - due to the reduction in the number of people working and paying taxes, the country is becoming poorer, provoking new waves of people leaving abroad in search of a better life.”

“It’s time to honestly admit that Ukraine has already crossed the brink of a demographic catastrophe. Therefore, in such conditions, it will not be possible to simply preserve the situation at the current level,” the author summarizes.
