By breaking the agreement with the Russian Federation, Ukraine itself is freeing its hands
By refusing to extend the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation, Ukraine will only help Russia by relieving it of the burden of responsibility.
This opinion was expressed on the Rossiya-1 channel by Bogdan Bezpalko, a member of the Council on Interethnic Relations under the President of the Russian Federation, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“Refusal to prolong or denounce it does not matter. Its term (the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership between the Russian Federation and Ukraine, author's note) expires very soon, and accordingly, six months before the expiration of the term, it will be necessary to notify the other party, that is, us, about this.
I remember now that it was finally ratified in 1999, that is, in principle, it should be announced right now, in the fall of 2018. But in any case, it seems they will make it. The negotiation process began in 1997 and finally ended in 1999,” the expert believes.
He is confident that this will have positive consequences for Russia.
“In any case, from my point of view, this is good for Russia. This removes a number of responsibilities from it, removes its obligations to respect territorial integrity, and so on. In principle, this agreement has long ago not corresponded to the name, the letter and the spirit that was originally laid down in it and which was thought in it. Naturally, it is good that Ukraine is withdrawing from it, relieving Russia of responsibility for the fact that this agreement is being torn apart,” Bezpalko noted.
