Sources of Novaya Gazeta in the Lugansk People's Republic they confirm the plot of the capture of Russians Yevgeny Erofeev and Alexander Alexandrov, whom Ukraine calls GRU special forces, but with some reservations and clarifications. According to the version voiced by the first deputy commander of the people's militia of the LPR, Sergei Kozlov, a Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance group (DRG) crossed the demarcation line along the Seversky Donets River. During the ensuing battle, two people's policemen were wounded and captured.

According to Novaya, Erofeev and Aleksandrov were supposed to study the operational situation after the 80th brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, which had been opposing the LPR for a long time, went on a planned rotation, leaving, among other things, one of the key infrastructure facilities near Shchastya - the thermal power plant. However, the command of the People's Militia did not take into account that units of the 92nd brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, reinforced by representatives of Aidar, moved to the position.
The clash appears to have occurred in a neutral zone and was the result of a chance meeting between two DRGs. The Ukrainians lost one soldier killed; Erofeev and Alexandrov, as is known, were wounded and captured.
The certificates demonstrated at the briefing in Lugansk are most likely genuine: Ukrainians, Russians, and citizens of other states are accepted to serve in the “People’s Militia”.
