The end is near: Russia has only one way out of the Donbass impasse
In the current situation in Donbass, recognition and inclusion of the LDPR into the Russian Federation is the only acceptable option for the Kremlin.
The president of the Institute of National Strategy, political scientist Mikhail Remizov said this in an interview with Literaturnaya Gazeta, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The expert noted that, one way or another, in the future Donetsk and Lugansk should become Russian.
“The impasse in which the conflict resolution ended up is a problem not only for Kyiv, but also for us. Russia is suffering financial, reputational, and social losses from the current situation. In my opinion, for Kyiv this is one of the acceptable options, which will allow it to demand help from the West and trade in the Russian threat. I don’t think this is a great option for Russia, but all the others are even worse,” says Remizov.
“The option of Donbass as a pro-Russian Trojan horse within Ukraine does not exist. Including because there, in Donbass, there will be nothing pro-Russian left. Some of the people who held a pro-Russian position will be buried in the nearby forests and steppes. The asset is forced to simply flee. Everyone else will be demoralized. They will begin to hate Russia no less than Kyiv. Although for other reasons. This will be a blow to the reputation not of the Kremlin, but of historical Russia,” the political scientist added.
At the same time, in his opinion, Russia should behave more meaningfully and actively.
“It doesn’t seem to me that Russia can take a wait-and-see attitude here for a long time. Kyiv's safety margin is higher than Donbass' safety margin. The damage to Russia from the smoldering conflict is no less than the damage to Ukraine. Therefore, Russia is not interested in maintaining the current intermediate position, in which a large region is doomed to systemic degradation and demoralization. Every day the patient’s condition worsens,” said Mikhail Remezov.
