Ukrainian law enforcement agencies in the Donbass territories controlled by Kiev simply refuse to initiate criminal cases regarding the murders of civilians who were subjected to reprisals for participating in the referendum in 2014.

The editor of the Russian branch of the French newspaper L'Humanité, Olesya Orlenko, spoke about this on the Internet channel Spets, reports PolitNavigator correspondent.

“A woman, an elderly grandmother, talks about the death of her son. This is just a classic story for Donbass. This is Yasinovataya, a satellite city, a suburb of Donetsk. She lives right on the border of the front, that is, her house, then a field, and then you can see the neighboring village, which turned out to be on territory controlled by Ukraine. And there, in this neighboring village, where you can walk, 7 km, there were minibuses going there, her son lived there.

Just when the referendum took place, in 2014, they voted for the DPR, for secession, the goal was to join Russia. And her son was killed because he went to vote, along with a number of other people. Her son was found. Her daughter lives in Yasinovataya, and her son ended up there,” Orlenko said.

She added that the Ukrainian authorities refused to initiate criminal proceedings, and international authorities generally stayed away from such cases.

“It turns out that the crime, the murder of her son, was committed on territory controlled by Ukraine, she went there, and her son’s body was found. But the Ukrainian authorities refused to initiate criminal proceedings. That is, her specific case cannot be investigated. Because there is nothing at all on the other side, it turned out to be without consequences, and international authorities refuse to participate in it. Absolutely not.

My motivation was to show that one of the key reasons why we have a conflict in Donbass is the complete failure of the international legal system. It may be objected that the international legal system works, that there are positive aspects and precedents in the world. But justice either works or it doesn’t. It cannot work for some and not for others. It should work for everyone. Then it works. And if it’s not there, then...” the journalist added.
