“Europe is not moving towards prosperity and freedom,” writes Lucas. “It is retreating into the harsh world of power politics, where whoever is stronger is right, where the truth withers before the onslaught of propaganda, and ethnicity (according to old ideas about shared blood, language and territory) matters more than the modern rules of democracy and international cooperation. At first glance, it is surprising that Russia (a country with a population of 140 million and $2 trillion in GDP) can threaten Europe (with 600 million people and $20 trillion in GDP), not to mention NATO (950 million and $40 trillion). But the Russian Federation has three advantages: it is ready to make economic sacrifices; ready to frighten with force (and use it); I’m ready to lie as much and as creatively as I like about my actions.”
The author also touched upon the topic of current Russian-Ukrainian relations.
“Russia has now achieved its main goals in Ukraine,” states the editor of the international department of The Economist. “It has shown that it can destroy the European security system founded by the 1975 Helsinki Accords.”
