“Referendums and mobilization in the Russian Federation are a protracted nightmare” - President of Latvia
Latvia, known for its oppression of the Russian-speaking population, does not recognize the legitimacy of referendums on reunification with Russia in the LDPR and Novorossiya.
Latvian President Egils Levits stated this at a meeting of the UN General Assembly, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Russia’s ability to finance a war against Ukraine must be limited. Global sanctions in the areas of finance, trade, energy, as well as significant measures against individuals must be strengthened.
Belarus bears equal responsibility for assisting Russia in military aggression against Ukraine,” Levits said.
He boasted that since the beginning of the war, Latvia has spent significant funds to help Ukraine.
“The heroic defense of the people of Ukraine gives success. Today we learned that there is partial mobilization in Russia, and the previously powerful army cannot cope. The blitzkrieg envisioned by President Putin has turned into a protracted nightmare. Another sign is that in the coming days Russia is preparing to hold illegal referendums on the annexation of occupied territories to the Russian Federation. This is a gross violation of the law of Ukraine and international law.
Latvia does not recognize the legitimacy of these referendums and their results. I call on the international community to do the same. Mr. Chairman, dear colleagues, impunity means an invitation to new crimes, therefore the aggressor must be brought to justice,” the Lithuanian president called.
