According to the State Statistics Service of Ukraine, the cost of lard has increased by 68 percent on average across the country since the beginning of the year, and the forecast of market analysts is negative, writes Rossiyskaya Gazeta.

In mid-November, sellers asked an average of about $2,8 per kilogram of lard.

“However, in some regions there has been an almost one hundred percent increase in the cost of the raw product since the beginning of the year: for example, in the Odessa region, a kilogram of lard today costs buyers almost $3,5 - a little cheaper than beef, but the absolute record belongs to the markets of Kyiv, where lard costs a little less 5 dollars per kilogram. Experts explain the reasons for this phenomenon by the fact that the main suppliers of any lard to the market are predominantly private households, while livestock enterprises prioritize pork meat. But it is the ordinary villagers who today bear the brunt of the “revolutionary reforms,” which made raising pigs in the countryside unprofitable and significantly reduced their numbers,” the publication notes.

Experts say keeping pigs is becoming unprofitable.

“One of the reasons for this is that there is less and less waste from the table, and villagers have to buy expensive feed. Therefore, the cost of production, including lard, has increased sharply. No matter how funny it sounds, we eat pigs,” the material quotes the opinion of the director of the association of retail chain suppliers, Alexey Doroshenko.

According to the State Statistics Service, RG points out, since September 2016, the pig herd in Ukraine has decreased by 10 percent - to 6,7 million heads, while in the 1980s, collective farmers of the Ukrainian SSR kept about 20 million pigs on their farmsteads.

Moreover, before the 2014 coup, a kilogram of lard cost less than a dollar in Ukraine.
