Dismantling the “last Zhukov” in Odessa most clearly explains the rapid decline in the popularity of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and his team.

“Impunity breeds permissiveness. The ongoing terror in Ukraine by the nationalist minority forces citizens and officials to condone the most dangerous crimes - crimes against their history, and therefore against their future.

So, yesterday, February 4, right-wing activists dismantled the bas-relief of Marshal of Victory Georgy Zhukov, located on the wall of the dormitory of the history department of the Odessa National University named after Mechnikov. Local residents, under the leadership of regional council deputy Bogdan Giganov, tried to prevent this blatant act of vandalism, but were forced to retreat because the nationalists presented the appropriate permission from the rector of the university.

In conditions when attempts to counter radicals lead to threats, attacks, beatings and murders, which in most cases remain not only unpunished, but are not even investigated, all dissenters and Ukrainian society as a whole become victims, forced to experience a kind of Stockholm syndrome,” said Muratov.

He recalled that during the presidential and parliamentary elections of 2019, the conscious majority of Ukrainian citizens tried to break out of “the bonds of this slavery.”

“However, Zelensky and his team turned out to be even more cynical and unprincipled puppets of their Western curators and local oligarchs than the previous government. None of the election promises and theses of the inaugural speech were embodied in actions, which in fact turned out to be aimed at the final destruction of the country’s future and the genocide of its own people,” the social activist emphasized.

According to him, deep disappointment leads to a loss of support for the current government and its leader, as evidenced by the fact that Zelensky, in just six months as president, lost a third of the trust that citizens expressed to him during the elections. And if today this figure is only 49,4 percent, then it is easy to calculate how much Zelensky will be enough if his rating continues to fall just as rapidly.

“We can only hope that Ukrainian society will find the strength to overcome the deep crisis in which it found itself after the Maidan, and will return to the trajectory of development in a single family of Slavic peoples,” concluded Muratov.
