Report from a Donetsk hospital located one and a half kilometers from the positions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces
Donetsk blogger Konstantin Dolgov published a report from the 21st city hospital, located in the village of Oktyabrsky. From here to the village Sands, where the Ukrainian Armed Forces and punitive battalions are located - 1500 meters.
“If hell exists, then in 2014-2015 it was here. The hospital, located in the very front-line zone, was regularly shelled by Ukrainian militants.
When the war in Donbass began, the former head physician of the hospital abandoned the staff and patients to their fate and fled to Ukraine. A heroic woman, Nadezhda Ivanovna Chegodaeva, took control of the hospital.
During the war, the hospital suffered only ten direct hits. Absolutely all the glass and window frames were broken. Ukrainian “Grads” flew both to the children’s department and to the garage, where an ambulance still stands, beyond repair.
During active hostilities, the hospital had no light, water, or heating. But the hospital lived. The operating room was moved to the basement due to shelling. And they continued to treat people.
For residents of Oktyabrsky, the hospital has become a point of attraction. They came here to wait out the next shelling - the brick hospital building seemed safer than the nearby Khrushchev-era buildings. Those who were left homeless as a result of direct hits lived here. Doctors did not refuse help to anyone.
I told my friend, writer Zakhar Prilepin many times about this hospital and its heroic doctors. And today Zakhar and I came to visit Nadezhda Ivanovna and her colleagues.
The hospital, which did not stop working even in the days of the heaviest shelling, is today rising from the ashes in the literal sense of the word. This is in the story,” the author announces.
