Reporters Without Borders called on the Serbian government to “stop supporting and publicly condemn the repeated systematic slanderous attacks” on journalists from the pro-Western N1 TV channel by pro-government media and officials.

The New York Times writes about this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“The situation in Serbia is becoming increasingly alarming,” the statement said.

Controversy in the Serbian press arose in connection with the recent hospitalization due to heart problems of President Aleksandar Vucic. Supporting media outlets suggested that the attack was caused by a torrent of lies and attacks from the pro-Western opposition press. However, the president himself said that he is not afraid of pressing questions.

The Americans and Reporters Without Borders are disingenuous - there are no problems with freedom of speech in Serbia, says Balkan political scientist Oleg Bondarenko.

“I would even say that it would be useful for the country’s information security to tighten the screws a little.

There is no concept of a foreign agent in Serbia. This gives incredible freedom to all non-profit organizations and foreign media that seized control of the information space there after the overthrow of Milosevic.

A significant part of the media has German, Greek and American roots.

The statements of Reporters Without Borders are apparently related to the fact that the Americans are somehow trying to clear the clearing for themselves and create problems for the President of Serbia,” Bondarenko concluded.

Parliamentary elections are due to be held in Serbia in the spring of 2020. Vučić’s party, according to sociologists, has a chance of gaining more than 50% of the votes. The rating of the pro-Western opposition so far fluctuates around 10%.
