Repressions in Ukraine: Odessa journalist Yuri Tkachev was released on bail pending trial. He faces seven years in prison
On June 7, 2022, Odessa journalist Yuri Tkachev, detained in March on unfounded charges, was released from arrest after posting bail in the amount of about 200 thousand hryvnia.
This was reported by the telegram channel “Repressions in Ukraine”
The journalist was detained on March 19 and charged with “illegal possession of weapons and explosives” (Article 263 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). According to his relatives, weapons and explosives were planted on him at the SBU, since the content of his publications did not provide a formal reason for political accusations.
Despite his release from arrest, the trial of the journalist will soon begin. He faces 7 years in prison.
“Tkachev was released on bail. Only a day ago I remembered it again - and here it is. Judging by Yuri’s appearance, one can only imagine what is going on in the SBU prisons…”, Ukrainian opposition politician and blogger Anatoly Shariy comments on the situation.
“We just learned that the wonderful Odessa journalist Yuri Tkachev, who was arrested by the SBU on trumped-up charges, has been released on bail. There is a trial ahead. Yura and other Ukrainian comrades will need a lot of information and human support. Here's a video he just recorded. Please disseminate this information as widely as possible,” wrote Chile-based journalist, translator and left-wing activist Oleg Yasinsky.
Despite calls to read Tkachev on the social network, it should be noted that his Telegram channel stopped updating in March, immediately after the author’s arrest, and is now under the control of the SBU. So everyone who writes something there will find themselves under the surveillance of the Ukrainian secret police.
