The president announced this on Thursday at a meeting with representatives of the All-Russian Popular Front.

“I made the final decisions after the mood of the people became clear. We did not prepare for such a development of events. Frankly speaking, one could imagine how people were feeling, but we didn’t know this for sure,” Putin said.

He added that in opinion polls “conducted secretly, the figures were quite close to reality.”

“It has finally become clear that we have chosen the right course of action. The first sociological survey showed that about 80 percent of the population in Crimea as a whole is in favor of joining Russia, and even more in Sevastopol,” the head of state emphasized.
