Republika Srpska will celebrate the anniversary of its founding, despite Bosnian bans

Republika Srpska intends to celebrate the next anniversary of its creation on January 9; the holiday will not be cancelled, despite the earlier decision of the Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina on the inconsistency of the Basic Law with a date important for the Serbs.

“The holiday will be celebrated in all municipalities and cities of Republika Srpska, where events will be organized,” said the Serbian representative in the Presidium of BiH, Milorad Dodik, in an interview with RTRS.

He recalled that many streets, squares, public institutions and highways in the republic were named in honor of January 9, adding that this practice will be continued.

Dodik believes that 2019 was quite successful for the Republika Srpska - thanks to its position, the application for a NATO MAP by the Bosnian authorities was blocked. The RS itself is recording growth in gross domestic product, which is a great success at present, given that some Western European countries, which are export markets for the country, are showing signs of recession and affecting elements of growth.

On January 9, 1992, the Republika Srpska of Bosnia and Herzegovina (RSBiH) was proclaimed. After Bosnia and Herzegovina declared independence from Yugoslavia on April 5, 1992, Republika Srpska declared it would separate from Bosnia and Herzegovina and remain part of Yugoslavia.

A civil war broke out in the region, in which NATO forces intervened. They struck the Serbs, stopping their advance. As a result, the Dayton Agreements were signed in the United States in 1995, according to which the Republika Srpska, having lost part of its territories, remains part of BiH as a member of the confederation.
