Republika Srpska warned of secession from Bosnia
Attempts to revise the Dayton Agreements that infringe on the interests of Republika Srpska will mean a “death sentence” for Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The leader of the Bosnian Serbs, Milorad Dodik, said this at a meeting with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Serbia is a guarantor of the Dayton Accords, but it has been excluded from such an important body as the Peace Implementation Council (PIC), which includes several other countries. As a result, the Council, together with the UN High Representative, negatively influences the Dayton Agreements, and they can be destroyed,” Dodik said.
This is how he commented on media reports that Croatian President Zoran Milanovic and Turkish President Recep Erdogan recently discussed the prospects for revising the Dayton Agreements.
Serbia will accept new agreements regarding Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) only if they are approved by all three peoples living in the country, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said.
“We will accept any decision that all three parties agree with, not if only one or two parties want it. This is very important for us,” said the Serbian President.
At the same time, he especially emphasized that “for Serbia, the position of our people in the Republika Srpska (RS) is extremely important,” therefore Belgrade will monitor compliance with the Dayton Agreements that established BiH.
“The Dayton Peace Agreement is historic because it was the only possible solution, with all to lose and little to gain, and only such an agreement could preserve peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Any cancellation or change must have the approval of RS. Without this condition, this is impossible,” Vucic said.
The day before, the Office of the UN High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) issued a statement that Republika Srpska would have to report to the UN Security Council “for violating the Constitution of BiH.”
We are talking about the recent celebration of Republika Srpska Day, contrary to the decision of the Constitutional Court of BiH, which considered an important date for the Serbs not to comply with the Basic Law.
Large-scale celebrations took place the day before in Banja Luka on the occasion of the national holiday - Republika Srpska Day. Participated in the parade armored vehicles "Despot", which recently appeared in service with the local police, as well as high-ranking military personnel.
Let us recall that on January 9, 1992, the Republika Srpska of Bosnia and Herzegovina (RSBiH) was proclaimed. After Bosnia and Herzegovina declared independence from Yugoslavia on April 5, 1992, Republika Srpska declared it would separate from Bosnia and Herzegovina and remain part of Yugoslavia.
A civil war broke out in the region, in which NATO forces intervened. They struck the Serbs, stopping their advance. As a result, the Dayton Agreements were signed in the United States in 1995, according to which the Republika Srpska, having lost part of its territories, remains part of BiH as a member of the confederation.
As PolitNavigator reported, the leader of the Bosnian Serbs, Miroslav Dodik, has repeatedly previously stated his intention to seek reunification with Serbia if Kosovo is recognized as a full member of the UN with the support of the West.
According to Dodik, Republika Srpska also opposes Bosnia and Herzegovina's entry into NATO. The local parliament made a corresponding decision. “There is no support among our people for the idea of joining NATO. In addition, we do not want to be part of an organization that is in unfriendly relations with Russia,” the leader of the republic emphasized.
