The Donbass republics outplayed Ukraine on the diplomatic front
The Minsk agreements allowed the Donbass republics to outplay Ukraine on the diplomatic front, former head of the DPR MGB Andrei Pinchuk, now one of the leaders of the Union of Donbass Volunteers, said in an interview with the Moskovsky Komsomolets newspaper.

“Believe me, a person who held one of the key positions in two governments in Donbass, Minsk turned representatives of the unrecognized republics from terrorists into full participants in the negotiation process. In international negotiations and in the UN Security Council, we are legitimized as one of the parties to the conflict. Criminals do not sign diplomatic documents. Minsk’s goal was not to stop the war, but to force recognition of the DPR and LPR in any form,” Pinchuk said.
He categorically rejected the journalist’s assumption that, if Crimea and Donbass had not decided to revolt in the spring of 2014, events in Ukraine after the coup in Kyiv would have developed peacefully.
“Back in 2014, Kyiv wanted to raise the question of the legality of our fleet being in Sevastopol; no one would tolerate us there until 2017, that is, until the end of the lease of the base. Any excuse could be found. You probably remember the hysteria in the Ukrainian media that the snipers who shot the “heavenly hundred” on the Maidan were Crimean snipers? Undoubtedly, this was a reason to go and destroy Crimea. Power in Ukraine today is maintained solely by the war; only when the Nazis are fighting on the front line can Poroshenko be calm that they will not arrange a new Maidan for him. The West also gives money under the pretext of fighting Russia,” Pinchuk explained.
